About US

The Center for Pharmaceutical Research and Development (CIDEM, in Spanish) is a closed-cycle company of the Group of Biotechnology and Pharmaceutical Industries of Cuba (BioCubaFarma). It has more than 25 years of experience in the Cuban biopharmaceutical sector, focused on research and development activity for the subsequent transference of technologies to the industry and the marketing of innovative, generic and naturally-derived pharmaceutical products.

CIDEM has developed more than 450 generic products which are included in the Cuban Basic List of Drugs. These products have been introduced to the Cuban pharmaceutical industry to satisfy the population’s demand as part of the import substitution program and to expand the therapeutic arsenal of the National Health System.

Mission

Promote the research and development of generic, innovative medicines and natural products, at different stages of their development up to their industrial scale and commercialization, provided with a quality system that harmoniously combines organization, qualified personnel and resources, thus contributing to raising the health levels of our population, as well as the scientific and socioeconomic development of the country.

Be a leader in the Research-Development and Innovation of medicines and synthetic products with a high scientific and technological level of national and international recognition.

Experience

Full-cycle company with leadership in important Drug Development Programs, contributing to import substitution and the expansion of the country’s therapeutic arsenal. CIDEM accumulates important results published in Scientific Journals with a High Impact Factor, and has an extensive Patent Portfolio; its Intellectual Property rights are represented in more than 30 territories around the world. Also, it has a close link with national and foreign entities, promoting scientific collaboration, business, and exchange and training of its scientific staff.

Historical Milestones​

CIDEM was created by Resolution 867 dated January 31, 1994, issued by the Minister of Public Health, and transferred to the Group of Biotechnological and Pharmaceutical Industries (BioCubaFarma) by Resolution 244/2012, issued by the Minister of Science , Technology and Environment.

Since its creation, CIDEM has remained linked to the Western Scientific Pole, created at the initiative of Commander in Chief Fidel Castro, where it played a fundamental role in the research and development of medicines and other products.

The center has worked on important Research Programs and Projects, whose results are part of the development of science in Cuba.

In almost 30 years of uninterrupted work in the research and development of medicines and pharmaceutical products, the company has introduced more than 500 medicines into the National Health System (SNS), contributing to the substitution of product imports and the expansion of the therapeutic arsenal of the country.

Start of Finished Forms Program for Import Substitution, Reformulations, New and Novel Products
A Pioneer project for generic medicines in the country, which laid the foundations for the creation and consolidation of the Basic Drug List.
Start of the Cancer Drugs Program
Consolidation of the Cytostatic Drug Production Plant, the only one of its kind in the country, and contributed with 24 injectable cytostatic products.
First Bioequivalence Study conducted by CIDEM
Carbamazepine Tablets
Program for the Development and Generalization of Natural and Traditional Medicine
Contribution to the development and sanitary registration of more than 30 products from natural sources.
Start-up of the Toxicological Genetics Laboratory at CIDEM.
Creation of the Pharmaceutical Information Center (CINFA)
Organization of information for the informative assurance to the entities of the pharmaceutical sector at national level.
Registration and production of the first cytostatic medicine in Cuba
Doxorubicin 10 mg (Solution) / Doxorubicin 50 mg (Lyophilisate)
Obtaining the first medicine in liposome form in the country
Clobetasol
AIDS Drug Program
Initiation of therapy for the treatment of the disease in Cuba with 12 drugs.
Program "Operation Miracle"
Cuba-Venezuela project that contributed to the development of 12 ophthalmological products.
Obtaining the nasal formulation and EPO patent
Patent: “RhEPO nasal formulations with low sialic acid content for the treatment of diseases of the Central Nervous System”.
National Award for TECHNOLOGICAL INNOVATION of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment.
Transference of the "Mario Muñoz" Pharmaceutical Laboratory to CIDEM
Later named Productive Complex "Mario Muñoz".
First JM-20 patent in co-ownership with the University of Havana
Patent: “Tricyclic and tetracyclic systems with activity on the central nervous and vascular system”. Granted in Cuba, South Africa, the United States, Canada, Indonesia and India.
Obtaining the first microencapsulated raw material from the seed of Cucurbita pepo L.
Production of Calprost® (natural product).
Start-up of the Solid Chlorinated Products Plant
Introduction of the first effervescent tablet in Cuba: DesinCLOR, for the treatment and disinfection of water.
Realization of the I Symposium on Research-Development and Technological Innovation in the Pharmaceutical Industry "IDIFARMA 2014"
Realization of the II Symposium on Research-Development and Technological Innovation in the Pharmaceutical Industry "IDIFARMA 2015"
Realization of the III International Congress on Research-Development and Technological Innovation in the Biopharmaceutical Industry "IDIFARMA 2016"
National Award of the Cuban Academy of Sciences for the result of Scientific Research
Inauguration of the Chemical and Biomolecular Synthesis Laboratory
Joint project between CIDEM and the University of Havana, for the management of research projects for innovative products and others.
Creation of the BioCubaFarma CHEMICAL-PHARMACEUTICAL DRUGS Program and the Formulations Commission
Coordinated by CIDEM; in order to propose the development of new products and systematically evaluate their development cycle.
Start-up of the Experimental Neuropharmacology Laboratory of CIDEM
Organization of the IV International Congress on Research-Development and Technological Innovation in the Biopharmaceutical Industry "IDIFARMA 2018"
Transfer of the EPB “Carlos J. Finlay” facilities to CIDEM.

Certification of the CIDEM Zebrafish Laboratory and Implementation of Preclinical Models for the R&D of New Drugs
Certification in compliance with the guidelines established in Regulation 39/04, PRINCIPLES OF GOOD LABORATORY PRACTICES FOR NON-CLINICAL HEALTH AND ENVIRONMENTAL SAFETY, issued by CECMED. This achievement enhances the laboratory’s technical capacity and ensures the generation of reliable results in the preclinical evaluation of products under research and development.
