The Center for Pharmaceutical Research and Development (CIDEM, in Spanish) is a closed-cycle company of the Group of Biotechnology and Pharmaceutical Industries of Cuba (BioCubaFarma). It has more than 25 years of experience in the Cuban biopharmaceutical sector, focused on research and development activity for the subsequent transference of technologies to the industry and the marketing of innovative, generic and naturally-derived pharmaceutical products.
CIDEM has developed more than 450 generic products which are included in the Cuban Basic List of Drugs. These products have been introduced to the Cuban pharmaceutical industry to satisfy the population’s demand as part of the import substitution program and to expand the therapeutic arsenal of the National Health System.
Promote the research and development of generic, innovative medicines and natural products, at different stages of their development up to their industrial scale and commercialization, provided with a quality system that harmoniously combines organization, qualified personnel and resources, thus contributing to raising the health levels of our population, as well as the scientific and socioeconomic development of the country.

Also, it has a close link with national and foreign entities, promoting scientific collaboration, business, and exchange and training of its scientific staff.
CIDEM was created by Resolution 867 dated January 31, 1994, issued by the Minister of Public Health, and transferred to the Group of Biotechnological and Pharmaceutical Industries (BioCubaFarma) by Resolution 244/2012, issued by the Minister of Science , Technology and Environment.
Since its creation, CIDEM has remained linked to the Western Scientific Pole, created at the initiative of Commander in Chief Fidel Castro, where it played a fundamental role in the research and development of medicines and other products.
The center has worked on important Research Programs and Projects, whose results are part of the development of science in Cuba.
In almost 30 years of uninterrupted work in the research and development of medicines and pharmaceutical products, the company has introduced more than 500 medicines into the National Health System (SNS), contributing to the substitution of product imports and the expansion of the therapeutic arsenal of the country.

New Therapeutic Entities or “Supergenerics”. Research-Development of drugs that offer therapeutic advantages over conventional generics based on new therapeutic combinations, or on improvements in the release or administration of the drug.
Development of generic drugs to increase and update the Basic Drug List.

Research and development of new alternatives for the pyrogen test.
Prevention of waterborne diseases with the development and production of broad-spectrum disinfectants. The Desinclor® line of effervescent chlorine tablets for the disinfection and purification of water stands out.
